Forrest Gump

"Emotional Intelligence"

Google Movie Synopsis:
Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

Scenario:
Keeping his promise to Benjamin Buford Blue, a.k.a., “Bubba,” Forrest went down to Bayou La Batre, Alabama, to buy his own shrimping boat with his endorsement money. After trying it out for a few days, Forrest quickly realizes it’s tough work. He connects with Lt. Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise) and together they give it another shot. With shear gut, determination and optimism, they survive a hurricane and the business takes off.

Selected Scene:
Lt. Dan: Come on. You call this a storm? It’s time for a show
down, you and me. I’m right here, come and get me, you’ll never sink this boat!
Reporter: Hurricane Carmen ran through here yesterday
destroying nearly everything in its path, and as in other towns up and down the coast, Bayou La Batre’s entire shrimping industry has falling victim to Carmen and has been left in utter ruin. Speaking with local officials this reporter has learned in fact only one shrimping boat actually survived the storm…
Forrest: After that, shrimping was easy. Since people still
needed them shrimp with shrimp cocktails and BBQ’s and all. We were the only boat left standing, Bubba Gump Shrimp is what they got. We’ve got a whole bunch of boats, twelve Jenny’s, big ol’ warehouse, we even have hats that say Bubba Gump on it, Bubba Gump Shrimp, it’s a household name.

Business Tip:
As you climb up the business ladder, you will find there will always be someone smarter or with more experience than yourself. In the movie, Forrest Gump, it seems just about everyone is “smarter” than Forrest. However, how do we explain all his success? Opening a successful shrimping business, a paid endorser for ping pong equipment, and becoming an original investor in Apple computers! He rose above all his challenges using the strength of his emotional intelligence. Cambridge Dictionaries defines emotional intelligence as; the ability to understand and control your own feelings, and to understand the feelings of others and react to them in a suitable way. By knowing how to deal and channel his emotions (and those of others), he was able to control and direct his motivation, optimism, and empathy. Individuals with this skill can accomplish many things, in and out of the workplace. Emotional intelligence is a valuable skill that can help you use emotional information when working with others, once accepted and practiced, your capacity to cope and handle work relationships will create leadership and advancement opportunities or whatever outcome you desire.
