"In Business, It's Always Personal"
Google Movie Synopsis:
Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), a former government operative, is
trying to reconnect with his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace). Then his worst fears
become real when sex slavers abduct Kim and her friend shortly after they
arrive in Paris for vacation. With just four days until Kim will be auctioned
off, Bryan must call on every skill he learned in black ops to rescue her.
Scenario:
The head of a human trafficking ring, Patrice Saint-Clair captures
Mills during his “unique” business event and orders his people to get rid of him. To no surprise, Mills escapes and goes after
Saint-Clair to find the whereabouts of his daughter. Mills corners him in an
elevator, at gunpoint.
Selected Scene:
Saint-Clair: We can resolve this, I know how you feel, we should talk, we can work this out you have no idea.
Mills: Where is she?
Saint-Clair: Please understand, please try . . . there’s a boat by the key, please understand, it was all business, it wasn’t personal.
Mills: It was all personal to me!
Business Tip:
How many times have you heard, don't take this personally? What does this mean? In the world of business it means, I’m going to screw you over but don’t get mad at me. When the power brokers make their decisions, a major factor has to do with the individual that stands to gain or lose. In the scene above, Saint-Clair was unaware of Mills’ unique background but when told of the family connection between Mills and his daughter, he made a fatal decision to not negotiate with him. When you bring family into any business decisions, it is definitely personal!
Now, you're probably asking how someone like yourself can control these factors—this is where your network comes in. With online searches and background checks, one can get instant information on which circles you run in or who your close contacts may be, it’s important to maintain a positive and influential personal brand. Fortunately, there's a thing called LinkedIn, a great tool in accommodating this need. I suggest you work toward building a “go-to” list of contacts that include a combination of any of the following; lawyer, business owner, corporate executive, politician, educator, doctor. These do not need to be work references (although, they could), just individuals that would be familiar with your name. Obviously, this by itself will not be reason enough for a person to change his/her decision, but it can prevent you from be “taken” as just another person looking for a break.
