Jaws

"Why Swim With The Sharks When You Can Be On Board With The Community"

Google Movie Synopsis:
When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Scenario:
After a recent shark attack, the local Mayor calls for a community meeting to discuss solutions.  During the meeting, a local townsman offers his services to capture and kill the shark.

Selected Scene:

WOMAN: Are you going to close the beaches?

BRODY: Larry and I have also decided to close the beaches for a short time.

VAUGHN: Only 24 hours!

BRODY: I didn't agree to that!

MRS. TAFT: That official business could take all summer!

MR. KEISEL: Maybe it's better to close.

MR. WISEMAN: We should make sure there is no danger.

MR. HASSETT: I didn't raise my kids to be some fish's lunch!

MRS. TAFT: The motel is all I own, you pull the plug on this town and I go down the drain with it.

MR. POSNER: Nobody's seen a shark.

MR. POLK: We'll lose business, we lose taxes, we lose our shirts!

QUINT: You all know me. You know what I do for a living. I'll go out and get this bird for you. He's a bad one and it's not like goin' down the pond chasing blue-gills and tommy-cods. This is a fish that can swallow a man whole. A little shakin', a little tenderizing and down ya' go. You gotta get this fellow and get him quick. If you do, it'll bring a lot of tourist business just to see him and you've got your business back on a paying basis. A shark of that size is no pleasure and I value my neck at a hell of a lot more than 3,000 bucks. . .I'll find him for three. But I'll kill him for ten.

Business Tip:
Has a lack of work experience ever prevented you from getting a job? You ask yourself, How do I get experience when no one will hire me because I don’t have experience? Well, the answer can very well exist in your own backyard. Whether it’s a town hall gathering or neighborhood meeting, there’s often plenty of work to go around. True, the duties are generally administrative and time intensive, and unlike Quint in the movie Jaws, you more than likely will not receive any money for services rendered, however, you will receive the next best thing, experience. Many companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations have a community relations component which provides positive exposure and access to the local community, a.k.a, customers. This means, you can also make valuable connections with a potential employer while displaying your work ethic and commitment to the community—which looks great on a resume and could lead to a job!  It get’s better, if you really put the effort into your service, you might find yourself in some type of leadership position within the community or maybe even offered a plum spot on an advisory board for a non-profit, and that doesn’t bite!
