Wall Street

"Be Persistent But Don't Do Crazy"

Google Movie Synopsis:
On the Wall Street of the 1980s, Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) is a stockbroker full of ambition, doing whatever he can to make his way to the top. Admiring the power of the unsparing corporate raider Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), Fox entices Gekko into mentoring him by providing insider trading. As Fox becomes embroiled in greed and underhanded schemes, his decisions eventually threaten the livelihood of his scrupulous father (Martin Sheen). Faced with this dilemma, Fox questions his loyalties.

Scenario:
Bud delivers a birthday gift to Gekko, his business idol. It is made apparent he has been trying to meet Gekko for quite some time. His persistence pays off and after waiting two hours, Gekko's receptionist finally gives him the news that he has 5 minutes with the man.

Selected Scene:
Bud: Hello, Natalie, you recognize the voice? I'll give you a hint, you're thinking seriously about marrying me...
Natalie: What are you doing here?
Bud: And you're even lovelier than I pictured. I brought a birthday present for Mr. Gekko.
Natalie: First of all, Mr. Fox, you can't just come barging in here. And what makes you think it's his birthday?
Bud: It's in the bible ( holding a Fortune Magazine), see. You better go buy him a present. Please, Natalie, let me give him the gift; Cuban cigars--Davidoff, his favorite and hard to get.
Natalie: Stay here, I'll see what I can do, wait outside....Five minutes.
Bud: Well... life all comes down to a few moments, and this is one of 'em...
Gekko: This is the kid that's called me 59 days in a row. Wants to be a player, There oughta be a picture of you in the dictionary under persistence.

Business Tip:
The definition of persistence can be interpreted in many ways, Webster defines it as, "the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people." What we don't know or discuss much is how long or the duration that defines persistence. In the case of Bud Fox, it was 59 days in a row.
Now, 59 days seems a little crazy for most of us, however, making 3-4 calls or stopping by Gekko's office once or twice would not have labeled Bud a persistent individual. The level of persistence should vary with the end goal. It's obvious, Bud developed a relationship with the receptionist (a point I will cover soon), which helped him with the 5 minute appointment he was able to receive. Nevertheless, persistence requires dedication, and patience, but be careful, there's a fine line between persistence and crazy, in this case, there's no doubt Bud was close to crossing!
