The Perfect Storm

"Don’t Let Greed Cloud Your Judgment"

Google Movie Synopsis:
Based on a true story, the film tells of the courageous men and women who risk their lives every working day, pitting their fishing boats and rescue vessels against the capricious forces of nature. Their worst fears are realized at sea on Halloween of 1991, when they are confronted by three raging weather fronts which unexpectedly collide to produce the greatest, fiercest storm in modern history -- "The Perfect Storm."

Scenario:
The crew of the Andrea Gail and the Minstral are among the seafarers hoping to make it back to safe harbor. U.S. Coast Guard air/sea rescue crews have the daunting task to help them get home alive. The decision of whether to ‘fish or cut bait’ (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun) is about to be made.

Selected Scene:

Capt. Billy Tyne: Just so you guys can understand what we are up against, we are looking at 40 –50 feet waves, gail force wind, its real bad one, right in our path.

Bugsy: Ah, the weather service is jerkin’ off

Capt. Billy Tyne: No

Alfred: Your afraid, I’ve never seen you scared

Capt. Billy Tyne: Pretty rough stuff out there that’s for sure, so either we hang out here for a few days until it calms down
Murph: Captain, we’ve got 60,000 pounds of fish here, what are we going let it spoil and feed it to the birds?

Sully: Yeah, I thought we were going to set the market, make a killin'.

Capt. Billy Tyne: Or we say the hell with it and drive right through it

Sully: You are the one who said we’re Glouster men.

Bobby: What do you say guys, are we or aren’t we?

Alfred: We can make it

Murph: What did we come out here for nothing

Sully: It’s a lot of money

Murph: Let’s make some money

Business Tip:

To achieve great success in most cases you must take great
risks. As in the case of this selected scene. Captain Billy Tyne’s meeting was one of those moments when a team decision has to be made. It is commonly said, greed clouds judgment. And if you are a risk taker, sooner or later the flip side will catch up to you, often when the payoff is at an all-time high and all you see is the $. The Glouster team went down together and stayed strong to the bitter end, The same can be said to the U.S. Coast Guard team that was sent to rescue them. Even though they lost a team member, through their team efforts the rest survived. In the workplace team members do not normally find themselves up against life or death situations, however, when taking risks, be prepared to live with the results and be a team member all the way to the end, whatever the result. As Bobby tells the Captain, “Skipper you made the right call, we had to try.”
In the end, one could argue that the team made a decision based solely on greed. The idea of wealth clouded their ability to clearly gauge the risk and, in this Hollywood case, you either live by the sword or die by the sword!
